Over recent months charcoal based cosmetics and toiletries have been endorsed by celebrities over social media, with products ranging from black face masks to black toothpaste. It offers a unique alternative the generic white that the industry uses. It is intriguing that there has been a shift in trends from classic white to charcoal based products which are black.

Itten believes that Light-Dark contrasts are a visual learning exercise to cultivate vision and perception. It tests the sensitivity of the viewers eye through Light-Dark gradations and tonal contrasts; by studying the photographs for a longer time it increases the ability to tell the difference between tones.
